Truecaller Introduces AI-Powered Assistant

AI has begun to replace voice agents in various roles, prompting companies to seek alternatives to current computer-generated voice models. Truecaller, a prominent caller ID service, has joined this trend by introducing an AI-powered Assistant capable of answering phone calls in users’ own voices.

This innovative feature is the result of a collaboration with Microsoft, where Truecaller taps into the Redmond giant’s cutting-edge Personal Voice technology, a component of Azure AI Speech introduced in November.

Truecaller’s Assistant, now available to paid users, can replicate users’ voices using Microsoft’s Personal Voice technology. This allows the Assistant to greet and respond to callers in the user’s own voice. Importantly, users retain control as they can still choose from preset system-generated voice options for the digital assistance feature, which can answer calls, screen unknown numbers, take messages, respond on their behalf, or even record the call.

To enable this feature, Truecaller users need to record a short script in their own voice after giving their consent. This recording creates a digital copy of their voice, allowing the Assistant to handle calls using this digital version.

Truecaller’s Assistant usually allows users to edit the introductory greeting template for callers. However, Truecaller confirmed in a statement that the greeting template is restricted when using a personal voice instead of a system-generated one. This restriction ensures callers know they are hearing a “digital” version of the user’s voice.

Despite this limitation, users can still customize the follow-up responses according to their preferences. Additionally, Azure AI Speech’s personal voice feature, available through limited registration-only access, adds watermarks to the speech outputs. These watermarks enable a detector tool to identify synthetic audio, ensuring transparency and trust in the technology’s use.

In a Statement, Raphael Mimoun, product director and general manager of Truecaller Israel, said, “We firmly believe that the personal voice feature will revolutionize how our users manage their calls and elevate their overall experience with Truecaller Assistant. We look forward to further exploring the potential of AI-powered voice technologies in partnership with Microsoft and delivering even more innovative solutions to our global user base,”

Truecaller’s Assistant will roll out its personal voice feature over the next few weeks, starting with the U.S., Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, Sweden, and Chile. Initially, this feature will be available to public beta users, and later, it will be accessible to all users in these eligible markets.

As technology advances, innovative solutions emerge in various industries.
