Sam Altman is personally reaching out to OpenAI investors, pushing them to support Rain AI, a rising challenger to the chipmaking titan, Nvidia. This move comes as Nvidia strengthens its ties with Elon Musk, creating an exciting dynamic in the AI chip space. Altman is promoting an upcoming $150 million Series B funding round, which is expected to value Rain AI at around $600 million. It follows Altman’s involvement in Rain AI’s initial $25 million seed round in 2022, which shows his commitment to the company.
The new funding round is set to kick off next month, and Altman has already introduced the company to his investors. Rain AI, a company just starting to make a name for itself, claims that its chips are more energy-efficient and powerful than Nvidia’s offerings. The company has also recently brought on former Apple chip executive Jean-Didier Allegrucci to head up hardware engineering—a big move for a company on the rise.
At the same time, Altman’s competitor, Elon Musk, is reportedly in talks with Nvidia about a potential investment in Musk’s AI venture, xAI. Nvidia currently holds an 85% market share in the AI chip market and is valued at a staggering $3.5 trillion. While it’s expected to continue supplying chips to OpenAI, according to reports, some insiders believe Altman might be worried about Nvidia’s growing relationship with Musk, especially considering Musk’s plans to purchase 100,000 Nvidia chips.
Wedbush analyst Dan Ives sees Rain AI as a serious contender in the AI chip space, noting that the company is getting a lot of buzz and positioning itself as a key player in this early stage of the AI revolution. With Altman’s backing, Rain AI is certainly drawing attention, and it’s clear that it’s not just Nvidia and its “Godfather of AI,” Jensen Huang, that investors need to be watching. Rain AI, with its innovative chips and growing prominence, is a name to keep an eye on in the future of AI.
