OpenAI Announces Acquisition of Chat.com

OpenAI has officially acquired Chat.com, expanding its portfolio of high-value domain names.

As of this morning, Chat.com has been redirected to OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the acquisition in an email statement.

Registered in September 1996, Chat.com is one of the web’s longest-established domains. Just last year, HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah purchased Chat.com for an impressive $15.5 million, marking it as one of the top two most significant publicly recorded domain sales.

Shah disclosed that he had sold Chat.com to an undisclosed buyer in March. Late today, in a post on X, he confirmed that OpenAI was that buyer, suggesting he may have received OpenAI shares as part of the transaction.

Despite the sale, the domain hasn’t formally changed ownership since last year, signaling that OpenAI is using Chat.com as a redirect to ChatGPT rather than adopting it as a new brand.

OpenAI declined to reveal the financial details of the Chat.com acquisition.
