In 2022, João Moura led AI engineering efforts at Clearbit, a startup focused on building a unified hub for business intelligence tools. Moura spearheaded the development of AI integrations and defined Clearbit’s AI product roadmap.
A year later, after HubSpot acquired Clearbit, Moura was ready to strike out independently. Having founded startups before, including Urdog, which developed a smart collar for pets, he now had a more technically ambitious vision.
Moura’s latest venture, CrewAI, is set to revolutionize back-office tasks by automating repetitive processes like report summarization and employee onboarding. CrewAI’s platform allows customers to build workflow automation and manage everything from a single dashboard.
Instead of training its AI models, CrewAI utilizes models from leading vendors like OpenAI and Anthropic to power these automations. Companies can integrate workflows with existing apps to automate marketing database enrichment, customer feedback analysis, and trend forecasting tasks.
Moura positions CrewAI as a more flexible alternative to traditional robotic process automation (RPA), which relies on rigid, rule-based “if-then” scenarios. “We’ve made it effortless for teams to deploy AI agents for tasks using any model, integrating with over a thousand applications while ensuring data privacy,” Moura explained. “We encourage customers to experiment with multiple models and choose the ones that best suit their business needs.”
While widely adopted, RPA has its limitations—it is often prone to errors and breakdowns. A 2022 Robocorp survey revealed that 69% of RPA adopters experienced broken workflows at least once a week. Entire businesses have emerged to manage these issues.
While AI isn’t without its flaws—like hallucinations or bias—Moura believes it offers far more resilience than RPA.
Investors are betting on that promise. CrewAI has secured $18 million in funding from top-tier backers, including Boldstart Ventures, Craft Ventures, Earl Grey Capital, and Insight Partners. High-profile investors like Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng and HubSpot CTO Dharmesh Shah have also shown confidence in Moura’s vision.
CrewAI faces stiff competition from companies like Orby, Bardeen, Tektonic, 11x.ai, and others. RPA giants like Automation Anywhere and UiPath incorporate AI to stay relevant. However, CrewAI stands strong. Valued at around $100 million, the company has already attracted 150 customers in its first year and plans to grow rapidly.
CrewAI’s new offering, Enterprise Cloud, is designed for larger organizations. It offers enhanced access controls, analytics, VIP support, and workflow templates. Built on open-source components, it adds a robust layer of security and auditing for Automation.
“We’re running 100,000 multi-AI executions per day across a wide range of use cases,” Moura said. “Given our growth trajectory, we expect to be cash-flow positive by next summer.”
With its headquarters in San Francisco and Brazil, CrewAI plans to use its funding to expand its team of 16 and continue advancing its automation capabilities.
