Anthropic Introduces New iPhone App

Anthropic, a well-funded AI startup with $7.6 billion in funding, is releasing a new paid plan for big companies, especially those in regulated fields like healthcare and finance. In addition, they plan to launch a new iPhone app.

The new plan, “Team,” gives businesses better access to Anthropic’s AI models and more control over managing users and settings.

Scott White, product lead at Anthropic, said in a statement, “Anthropic introduced the Team plan now in response to growing demand from enterprise customers who want to deploy Claude’s advanced AI capabilities across their organizations,” He also said, “The Team plan is designed for businesses of all sizes and industries that want to give their employees access to Claude’s language understanding and generation capabilities in a controlled and trusted environment.”

The Team plan, alongside Anthropic’s premium plan, Pro, offers more usage per user than Pro does. This means users can have significantly more chats with Claude. (We’ve reached out to Anthropic for specific numbers.) Team customers also receive a 200,000-token (~150,000-word) context window, along with all the benefits of Pro, such as early access to new features.

A context window, or context, refers to the information (like text) that a model considers before producing an output (like more text). Models with small context windows might forget recent conversations, while those with larger contexts remember more and understand the data better.

The team introduces new toggles for billing and user management. Soon, it will also have collaboration features like citations to confirm AI-generated claims (since models like the Anthropic model sometimes hallucinate), connections to data repositories such as codebases and customer relationship management platforms like Salesforce, and — particularly interestingly — a workspace for team members to collaborate on AI-generated documents and projects, according to Anthropic.

Shortly thereafter, the Team’s users can utilize the tool use capabilities for Claude 3, which is now in open beta. This feature lets users add custom tools to Claude 3, enabling it to perform various tasks, such as retrieving a company’s current stock price or the local weather report, similar to OpenAI’s GPT models.

White said, “By enabling businesses to deeply integrate Claude into their collaborative workflows, the Team plan positions Anthropic to capture significant enterprise market share as more companies move from AI experimentation to full-scale deployment in pursuit of transformative business outcomes,” He also said. “In 2023, customers rapidly experimented with AI, and now in 2024, the focus has shifted to identifying and scaling applications that deliver concrete business value.”

Even though Anthropic boasts impressive capabilities, convincing businesses to board could still require significant effort.

Recent surveys from Gartner and McKinsey shed light on the challenges. Gartner found that 49% of companies struggle to estimate and showcase the value of AI projects, making internal buy-in challenging. Additionally, McKinsey’s poll revealed that 66% of executives believe it will be years before generative AI delivers substantial business outcomes. These findings suggest that Anthropic and similar companies face hurdles in gaining widespread adoption among businesses.

Despite the challenges, the forecast for corporate spending on generative AI is staggering.

IDC estimates it’s expected to reach $15.1 billion by 2027, almost eight times its 2023 total.

This growth is prompting generative AI vendors, notably OpenAI, to focus more on the enterprise market.

OpenAI recently announced that over 600,000 users have signed up for the enterprise tier of its generative AI platform, ChatGPT Enterprise. They’ve also introduced various tools to meet corporate compliance and governance needs, such as a new user interface for comparing model performance and quality.

Anthropic is competitively pricing its Team plan at $30 per user per month, billed monthly, with a minimum of five seats. While OpenAI doesn’t disclose the price of ChatGPT Enterprise, Reddit users have reported quotes ranging from $30 per user per month for 120 users to $60 per user per month for 250 users.

“Anthropic’s Team plan is competitive and affordable considering the value it offers organizations. The per-user model is straightforward, allowing businesses to start small and expand gradually. This structure supports Anthropic’s growth and stability while enabling enterprises to strategically leverage AI.” said Mr. White.

Anthropic’s launch of Team is undoubtedly bolstered by its strong position in the market.

With Amazon’s recent $4 billion investment (following a $2 billion investment from Google), Anthropic has significant financial backing. Reports suggest the company is poised to surpass $850 million in annual revenue by the end of 2024, a 70% increase from earlier projections. Given this momentum, the Team appears to be a natural progression for Anthropic’s expansion efforts. For now, Anthropic seems capable of allowing Team to grow organically as it works on persuading hesitant businesses that its generative AI surpasses the competition.

Anthropic iOS app

Anthropic made another announcement on Wednesday: the launch of an iOS app. This move isn’t unexpected, considering the company has been actively recruiting iOS engineers recently.

The iOS app offers free access to Claude 3 and upgraded Pro and Team access options. It syncs with Anthropic’s web client and utilizes Claude 3’s vision capabilities to provide real-time analysis for uploaded and saved images. For instance, users can upload presentation charts and ask Claude to summarize them.

White said, “By offering the same functionality as the web version, including chat history syncing and photo upload capabilities, the iOS app aims to make Claude a convenient and integrated part of users’ daily lives, both for personal and professional use,” He also added, “It complements the web interface and API offerings, providing another avenue for users to engage with the AI assistant. As we continue to develop and refine our technologies, we’ll continue to explore new ways to deliver value to users across various platforms and use cases, including mobile app development and functionality.”
