Amazon's AI Chatbot Rufus Makes Shopping Easier

Amazon has announced that its AI-powered shopping assistant, “Rufus,” is now accessible to all U.S. customers via the Amazon mobile app. Located in the bottom right corner of the app’s main navigation bar, Rufus is designed to assist customers with product searches, comparisons, and purchase recommendations.

Initially available to a limited number of U.S. customers in beta, Rufus has now been rolled out widely after being tested with “tens of millions of questions,” according to Amazon.

Introduced in February, the AI chatbot has been trained using Amazon’s product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&As, and other publicly available online information. However, Amazon has not disclosed specific details about which websites’ data was used to enhance its assistant’s recommendations or whether this included data from other retail websites.

Rufus is powered by an in-house large language model (LLM) specialized for shopping. This allows customers to inquire about various aspects of products, such as important factors to consider when making a purchase, how items differ from alternatives or the durability of a product based on customer reviews and expert analyses from across the web.

Rufus is capable of handling a wide range of customer inquiries. Users can ask for advice on various purchasing decisions, such as “What to consider when buying headphones?” or “What to consider when detailing my car at home?” The AI can also provide information on specific product categories, like “What are clean beauty products?” or offer recommendations for particular activities, such as “What do I need for cold weather golf?” Furthermore, customers can engage in a dialogue with Rufus by expressing their intentions, for example: “I want to start an indoor garden.” The AI will then suggest appropriate items to purchase for that purpose.

During the testing phase, Amazon observed that users posed questions to the AI and interacted with the related questions displayed in the chat interface to guide their inquiries. For example, a customer might ask Rufus, “What’s the material of the backpack?” and then select another suggested question, “What do customers say?” to gather more information.

Amazon reports that Rufus’s knowledge extends beyond product information. For instance, when a customer inquired about a pool umbrella for Florida, the AI provided additional context about Florida’s climate, including details about weather patterns and humidity levels.

Rufus demonstrated its utility in product comparisons and keeping customers informed about current trends. Users could ask about a product’s most recent model or popular fashion styles.

During the beta phase, Rufus also functioned as a personal assistant for customers, helping them locate their previous orders or obtain information about the delivery status of their current purchases.

U.S. customers can access Rufus by ensuring they have the most recent version of the Amazon Shopping app installed. The AI assistant can be found in the bottom navigation bar, represented by an icon featuring chat bubbles with a sparkle.

During an evaluation, Rufus proved to be a capable shopping companion, generally avoiding problematic responses to queries unrelated to shopping. However, the assistant occasionally provided inaccurate information, and its reliance solely on Amazon’s product catalog, despite its breadth, could sometimes compromise the quality of its recommendations.

Amazon has stated its commitment to ongoing improvements for Rufus over time.
